What Makes Good Skincare

What company makes the best skincare products? If you believe advertising, all of them do. If instead you listen to expert opinions, you can really find safe and effective products.

What Do Dermatologists Say?

Dermatologists say to avoid petrolatum, parabens, and artificial preservatives. They also say to avoid added fragrances. Petrolatum is a byproduct of petroleum or gasoline production. It clogs your pores and interferes with your natural skin rejuvenation process.

Other petroleum byproducts that are often found in moisturizers include mineral oil, paraffin wax, and liquid paraffin. None of these are effective moisturizers. Quite the opposite. They are cheap ingredients that eventually lead to excessive dryness.

Preservatives and fragrances commonly cause allergic reactions and irritation. The type of irritation that sometimes requires a visit to the dermatologist. The best skincare products are free of added fragrances, preservatives, petrolatum, and other skin irritants.

Dermatologists also recommend we avoid 'daily' use of organic and synthetic sun screening compounds. At the very least, they inhibit the body's ability to create vitamin D. Considering your body requires vitamin D to function properly, inhibiting it does not sound like a good idea. At the worst, the synthetic versions may increase your risk of skin cancer. Yes, many synthetic sun screening compounds are known to cause cancer. Kind of defeats the purpose, don't you think?

What Do Public Safety Groups Say?

Avoid ingredients such as oxybenzone, benzophenone and dioxybenzone. They increase free radical production and damage DNA when exposed to sunlight. Sodium methyl-paraben, propyl-paraben, butyl-paraben and methyl paraben are known to have estrogenic activity, which can play a role in female breast cancer and damage the male reproductive system. For a complete list of ingredients to avoid, visit Skin Deep, a safety database composed by the Environmental Working Group.

The best skincare products contain only safe ingredients from nature. The ingredients should be safe enough to eat. Everything you put on your skin can pass through the epidermis, enter your bloodstream, and accumulate in your tissues. Known toxins should be avoided.

What's Effective?

For moisturizing, plant oils that are molecularly similar to human sebum (human skin oil) are the most effective. For anti-aging, effective moisturizers and natural antioxidants are the most effective. For healing razor cuts and nicks, witch hazel is the most effective.

To provide sunburn protection, zinc oxide is the most effective. To provide increased natural protection from the sun on a daily basis, the best skincare products include vitamin B5 and other botanical extracts.

Kelp, Keratin and Kaolin

A specific variety of kelp, known as wakame, provides nutrients needed for your skin's overall health and appearance, and UV radiation protection. In addition, this kelp prevents hyaluronic acid from breaking down too quickly; which is one of the proteins responsible for your skin's elasticity.

Keratin is another protein responsible for skin elasticity, and is necessary for skin cell rejuvenation. Functional Keratin is the best form of the protein because it can be easily used by your cells.
Kaolin is a clay extract that absorbs excess oil and pulls dirt and grime out of your pores. It is found in the most effective deep cleansing masks.
