Natural Herbal Remedies For Impotence

When impotence is present, many men are reluctant to try invasive treatments. In fact, it seems that the less invasive the treatment, the more that men will be willing to try it. Of the different treatments available for impotence, herbal remedies are one of the first things for which men will look.

Although, herbal remedies for impotence have not received any recommendation or approval by the FDA, herbal remedies exist and may have a long history as being used by men for impotence. There are a few more popular herbal remedies for impotence that can be purchased at the health food store, drug store or even some grocery stores. One such herbal remedy is gingko biloba.

When blood flow to the penis is so poor that it hinders the ability to have an erection, gingko biloba extract may help. Gingko biloba is an Asian tree with large leaves and yellow seeds. An extract from the leaf is made into an easily edible form such as capsules. The gingko biloba extract has been studied and under research conditions, has shown to increase blood flow, including to the penis.

Another herbal remedy that has been studied for its effects on erectile dysfunction is Korean red ginseng. In some limited studies on Korean red ginseng has been shown to greatly improve sexual performance for men after taking the ginseng regularly three times a day for two months. Ginseng stimulates the body's functions, generates a sense of well being and improves the physical capacity for activity. The Korean red ginseng is a large plant of which the roots are used for this herbal remedy.

Yohimbe is another plant that has been studied for its effects on improving the erection so that sexual performance was possible. When yohimbe was combined with L-arginine, 45 men had improved sexual performance after just taking the combination once. Yohimbe extract comes from the bark of a West African tree. L-arginine is a common amino acid that can be extracted from many plant and animal food sources.

Although not enough research has been performed on this herbal remedy, damiana is another popular herb that is taken for impotence. The plant, which comes from Central and South America, has been traditionally taken by the indigenous people for its positive effects on sexual performance. A 2002 experiment involving rats and damiana found that the rats were more sexually active and had higher rates of ejaculation than previous to taking the damiana. Damiana is reported to increase sexual response and improve sexual performance.

In the case of impotence, herbal remedies may seem more attractive than other treatment methods because the source is natural. Although natural, herbal remedies frequently have enough strong chemicals naturally so that they should be taken with extreme care and caution. It is also important to establish if any allergies or sensitivities exist before taking any herb.

If a man is interested in taking an herbal remedy, he should consult a doctor who specializes in herbal remedies, such as a naturopath, homeopath or aromatologist. It may be possible to treat impotence effectively when the right herb is chosen to treat a specific cause of impotence.
