Penile Implants for the Treatment of Impotence

When psychological and/or organic reasons have caused a complete lack of erections and sexual activity in a man's life, penile implants may offer a solution. Many men rely on penile implants to provide them with the erection that they need to have sexual intercourse regularly in their life.

Since the surgery involved with placing an implant in the penis can permanently change the appearance and structure of the penis, this type of surgery is considered as a last option. Even so, men report that they are happy with the results because of the renewed ability to have sexual intercourse. The ejaculation is not as important as the physical closeness that is enjoyed when the men are with their sexual partners.

Penile implants are available in different types. The penile implant may be inflatable or it may be permanently rigid and leave the penis in an erect position. The inflatable penile implants may be either a two or three piece ensemble that is used to bring the penis to an erect state.

The two piece penile implant involves a pump and a pair of inflatable tubes with a reservoir placed at the end of the tubes within the body cavity. The erection is caused by moving the liquid from the reservoir to the tubes through a pump action. The pump is in the scrotum. When the penis is bent downwards for ten seconds, the fluid goes back into the reservoir and the erection is over.

During surgery for the three piece penile implant, a pair of inflatable cylinders are placed in the penis, a pump is placed in the scrotum and a reservoir for the liquid that fills the cylinders is placed nearby in the abdominal cavity. To achieve an erection, the pump in the scrotum is gently squeezed until the penis has a full erection. A button is pushed to deflate the penis.

The positionable penile implant does not use a pump at all. Instead, flexible rods are placed into the penis. The penis may be lifted to an erect state or pushed down to resemble the flaccid position. The flexible penis may be shifted to any position that the man desires. The penis will always be rigid with this type of implant and the erection may be revealed through some types of clothing.

All of these implants are designed to be undetectable, otherwise. Both the penile implants and the pump devices are meant to give a natural appearance to the penis and scrotum. The penis will look right in a rigid or flaccid state with a penile implant. The pump in the scrotum is small enough to not be noticed by anyone, if the man is clothed or unclothed.

As a treatment for impotence, penile implants have the ability to give a man back his his sex life again, which can soothe any second thoughts about the invasive nature of the surgery. Penile implants have successfully provided men with an erection and the ability to have sexual intercourse when other methods have failed and this is why hundreds of thousands of men have gone the penile implant route as an effective treatment for impotence.
